Hull United emerged victorious from their Whiteheads Fish & Chips Cup Second Round home tie against South Cave United Reserves on Saturday afternoon.
The Citizens got themselves ahead in the 16th minute. James Nichols sent a header into the back of the South Cave net having got on the end of a corner taken by Attila Filep. Six minutes later, the visitors equalised through a set piece of their own and capitalised on a lapse in concentration from the Citizens.
In the 27th minute, South Cave passed up a glorious chance to take the lead through a shot which was put just wide. Meanwhile, James Nichols had an effort saved a few minutes before the break. The early stages of the second half saw Filep have a couple of strikes saved by the South Cave keeper. There was a guilt edged opportunity for the Citizens to go back in front in the 74th minute. This saw Dan Nichols put a header over the bar after being teed up by Callum Staves.
Right down the other end of the pitch, South Cave gave themselves the lead courtesy of a headed effort. However, James Nichols put the Citizens back on level terms in the 84th minute when he was gifted the ball by the South Cave defence and calmly slotted home to bag himself a brace.
In the dying stages, both sides had an opportunity to win the tie and avoid penalties. Steve Holwell fired an effort over the bar whilst Citizens keeper Harry Milner tipped a South Cave shot onto the post.
With the final whistle blown, it then went to a penalty shootout to determine who’d ultimately come out on top. Consequently, it was the Citizens that progressed to the Third Round of the competition as they scored all five of their penalties to win 5-4. Those spot kicks were converted by James Nichols, Dan Nichols, Filep, Holwell and Tresor Kalilwa.
On Tuesday night, the Citizens resume their league campaign. This’ll see them welcome the South Cave United first-team to Haworth Park for a 7:30pm kick-off.
