United started with positivity and took control of the game early on. After 15 minutes, United were awarded a free kick just past the halfway line. Sharp stepped up and rocketed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-nil. Another chance came when Robinson took a shot from outside the box that ricocheted off the post. More chances came from Tate, Ibboston, Holmes and Damms but United couldn't hit the target.
Hatlepool made some good runs down both wings, but their opportunities were kept at bay by the solid back four: Ward, Wilshere, Sharp and Newlove. Sharp and Wilshere dominated the ball in the air in defence.
The second half kicked off; United knew Pool would use the wind to their advantage, so defensively, United dropped. Hartlepool conceded numerous corners but United were able to clear each time.
For United, Brown made a great impact on the game with her ball control and passing. She linked up well with Ibboston and Tankard in the middle. Damms and Tate's work rate was fantastic. They closed down Hartlepool players from the back so they couldn't take control of the match.
Pool had a chance to equalise when a well-struck free kick was taken by the wind and hit the side post. In the other goal, numerous chances were missed to double the score.
United played well by keeping the ball on the floor. This started with Cooke making some great decisions to play out from the back. A whole committed display from all players meant United took the 3 points.
Player of the match was awarded to Faith Brown for her positive impact on the match. She was calm on the ball and took control in the middle.
Coach comment:
A solid performance this week from United. We included some changes that impacted us in a positive manner. A real review of going back to basics has helped us. There are still lots to work on, but I'm happy that we are on the right path. It will be a tough game next week against Wallsend but we will prepare well.
